How to fix product titles that are too long or get truncated

Stay within 150 characters, move decisive product details into the first 70, and remove promotional or gimmicky text.

What the diagnostic means

Google accepts product titles from 1 to 150 characters and warns that titles beyond the limit are truncated. Shoppers often see only the first 70 or fewer characters, depending on screen size.

Why act: A title that exceeds the limit can be truncated and receive a warning. Promotional text, all-caps emphasis, HTML, or an inaccurate title can violate Google’s minimum requirements and lead to disapproval.

Common causes

  • A catalog template appends every attribute, collection, and keyword to the title.
  • The most useful product, brand, variant, or size details appear after likely truncation.
  • Shipping, price, sale dates, or other promotional phrases were inserted into the title.
  • Variant rows reuse a generic parent title without distinguishing details.
  • AI-generated text was placed in title instead of the structured_title workflow Google documents.

Resolution checklist

Fix it step by step

  1. Shorten title to 150 characters or fewer while keeping it specific and accurate.
  2. Move the product type and decisive brand, model, color, size, or variant details near the beginning.
  3. Remove price, sale, shipping, delivery, company promotion, HTML, symbols, and all-caps emphasis.
  4. Make sibling titles distinguish their exact variants and describe the linked product.
  5. If a title was generated with generative AI, follow Google’s current structured_title requirements.

Before you resubmit

  • Every title contains between 1 and 150 characters.
  • The first 70 characters identify the product and its most useful differentiators.
  • Titles contain no promotional text, gimmicky symbols, HTML, or emphasis casing.
  • Each variant title describes the exact product reached by its URL.

Frequently asked questions

Is 70 characters the maximum title length?

No. Google documents a 150-character maximum and recommends using the available space. The first 70 or fewer characters are especially important because that may be all a shopper sees.

Will a title over 150 characters always be disapproved?

Google says it truncates a title that exceeds the maximum and issues a warning. Other minimum-requirement violations, such as promotional or inaccurate text, can have stronger consequences.

Does FeedGuardrail detect promotional title text?

Not currently. It checks presence and length deterministically. The guide provides a manual checklist for relevance, promotions, formatting, and AI-generated-title handling.
